Does my child Have Dyslexia?
If your child is having trouble learning to read, you may be wondering if they have dyslexia. Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability that results in unexpected difficulty with reading and writing skills. Children with dyslexia often have average or above-average intelligence in the areas of oral language or math, but may not be succeeding academically due to specific written language difficulties.
With early identification and intervention, children with dyslexia can succeed in school and in life. Below are some signs that you may want to pursue a dyslexia evaluation for your child:
In young children:
Difficulty with rhyming and syllable skills
Trouble learning and remembering common nursery rhymes
Difficulty learning to recognize the letters in their own name
Difficulty learning and remembering letter names/letter sounds
Unable to sound out simple words, such as “dog,” but will make a guess based on the picture instead of the letters in the word
Very resistant to reading, complains that it is too hard
In older children:
Slow, choppy reading that makes it difficult to understand what has been read
Unable to sound out unfamiliar words, makes wild guesses unrelated to the letters in the word
Poor spelling
Struggles to finish tests on time
Mispronounces words, or says incorrect words that sound similar to the correct alternative (i.e. “lotion” for “ocean”)
Uses many nonspecific words, such as “stuff” or “thing”
Extreme difficulty learning a foreign language
